Simple steps families can take before and during the first weeks at a new school.

Starting at a new school is a big change for any child. A little preparation can make the first weeks calmer for the whole family.

Before the first day: talk positively about the new school, visit together if you can, and set a regular sleep routine. Prepare clothes, bag and stationery the evening before.

In the first weeks: ask open questions such as "What was the best part of your day?" rather than "Was it good?". Expect some tiredness — new routines take energy.

Stay in touch: let the school know about anything that may affect your child, such as a recent move. If you have a concern, contact the school early so that it can be resolved together.

Every child settles at their own pace. Patience and regular conversations at home help children feel secure.
