A planning checklist for Somali families abroad who are preparing to move home with their children.

Moving to Mogadishu with children means planning for their education as well as the move itself. Starting early gives you time to find the right school and to prepare your child.

Three to six months before you move: contact schools by email or telephone, ask about available grades and fees, and request information about the application process. Gather your child's recent school reports, certificates and any records of additional support.

One to two months before: confirm grade placement and the start date with the school, check which documents are needed, and arrange translations if required.

When you arrive: request a visit so that your child can see the school before starting. Allow time to adjust — a new country, climate and language environment can take a few weeks to get used to.

Speaking Somali at home and keeping up reading in English can help children feel confident in both languages.
