Everyday ways parents can encourage reading, curiosity and good study habits.

Parents are a child's first teachers. Small, regular habits at home make a real difference to learning at school.

Read together every day, in Somali, English or Arabic. Ask your child to tell you about the story, or to predict what will happen next.

Create a quiet place and a regular time for homework. Help your child plan, but let them do the work themselves.

Talk about what your child is learning. Use everyday activities — shopping, cooking or travelling — to practise counting, measuring and problem solving.

Encourage questions and curiosity, and praise effort, not only results. Limit screen time in the evenings so that children sleep well.

If you are unsure how to help with a subject, ask your child's teacher for ideas.
